China heeft in juni de omvang van zijn positie in Amerikaans staatspapier opnieuw verlaagd, terwijl het land meer staatspapier in Japanse Yen en Britse pond heeft gekocht. Dat heeft het Amerikaanse ministerie van Financiën bekend gemaakt.

De positie in Amerikaanse Treasuries werd door China met 24 miljard dollar verminderd tot 843,7 miljard dollar - een daling van 2,7 procent. In totaal houdt China nu meer dan 4.000 miljard dollar aan buitenlands staatsobligaties aan. Dat is een toename van 55,6 miljard dollar, ofwel 1,2 procent.

Een 'kwakkeleconomie' zoals in Japan zou in Nederland ook zijn intrede kunnen doen. Daarvoor waarschuwde financieel deskundige Willem Middelkoop maandagmorgen in het radio-1 programma Dit Is De Dag. 'Mensen lopen niet huilend over straat en verliezen niet massaal hun baan, maar echt goed gaat het ook niet.'

Russian premier Vladimir Putin has ordered a halt to all exports of wheat and other grains from August 15, raising the stakes dramatically in the crisis over wheat supplies.

"This is very serious," said Abdolreza Abbassanian, chief grain economist at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. "It's a desperate situation because it has caught everybody off guard. We're not facing the situation of two years ago but there is a risk of destabilising panic."
